- Flaxen Straw (alias Dragon Slayer of Baltimare) has made his living doing what many ponies are too terrified to do; slay dragons.
As a foal, Flaxen grew up in a normal setting, but how did he become destiny bound to such a dangerous occupation? When we was so young, Flaxen saw a dragon once fly over his hometown of Baltimare and watched in awe as Celestia's soldiers took the dragon down. An awesome spectacle of fire, flight and magic blossomed the colt's interest. Around the age of 8, Flaxen would play fight an extensive collection of dragon figurines and duel them all with a foam sword he treasured so much.
One day, at the age of 11, Flaxen was subjected to the onslaught of bullies constantly picking on him and his passion for fighting dragons. Once, a bully went so far as to not only push Flaxen into the dirt for no reason, but also took his beloved foam sword and tore it apart right in front of him. The bully was then suspended from the school, but Flaxen still lost his sword. Not only would these problems occur at school, but at home. His parents would argue and try to talk Flaxen out of his passion, but it never went anywhere. His mother would nurture the fact that he loved it so much; his father, on the other hand, was not. His father would yell if he ever played with his toys for too long or if he wore his toy set of armor outside of his room.
After constantly dealing with his parent's arguing and the torture school had to offer, Flaxen packed up a small bandanna filled with light luggage and ran away. It was just before sunrise right before his parents would wake up and get him ready for school when the young foal packed his belongings and evaded his groggy mother and father, snuck out the front door and ran off to the Horseshoe Bay. Walking through the Hayseed Swamps would be shear suicide, but stowing away on a ship seemed to be an easier mode of transport. Hiding behind barrels and crates, Flaxen overheard dock workers talk about a ship called the S.S. Sea Mare that was to go on an expedition South-East near the dragon migration pit. He could barely contain his excitement.
As dock workers boarded goods and supplies onto the ship, Flaxen managed to writhe into an empty crate he pushed in with the other crates to make it seem that there were more supplies. The dock workers fell for it-- bringing the boxed up colt into the cargo hull. After waiting what felt like hours, Flaxen, in a half asleep daze heard cheering-- the S.S. Sea Mare began her long journey to the dragon site. Flaxen then heard the miscellaneous sounds of locks clicking. When the ruckus drew quiet, Flaxen kicked the crate open and stretched his stiffened limbs. Though he was trapped in the cargo hull, he made the best of it-- with enough food, water and a bucket to relieve himself into and an unlocked window to throw it out of, it would last him through the journey.
After several days of sea fairing and hiding from crew members that would come down to gather supplies, the ship docked onto the shoreline of the dragon infested wilds. At the crew began to move equipment from the ship onto the sandy shore, Flaxen hoofed it right out from an escape hatch, hidden behind empty barrels and crates and jumped from the edge of the ship nearest to the shallow waters. With his bag-on-a-stick in his mouth, Flaxen ran into the tall, overgrown trees of the jungle, surrounding the volcano. There he was, the land where most ponies fear to tread. Rummaging through the harsh overgrowth of the jungle floor, Flaxen finally got to the monstrous mountain of smoke and fire.
Marching up the shuddering mount, Flaxen breathed heavily, climbing through the immense heat and exhaustion. His heart, however, beat strong with the thrill of a fight with a snaggletoothed dragon. Upon reaching the top, Flaxen's tired body tensed and the pain was immediately lifted from his mind when he saw that there was one dragon, resting in the center of the volcano. Barreling down the steep slope, Flaxen jumped inches from searing his hooves in the lava and landed on the rock platform-- now, was the moment he had anticipated all of his life.
Setting down his luggage, he took out a small, steel dagger he had bought with bits he saved up for years. He raced towards the dragon, hoping to get the first hit, but the beast stirred. It was a big bastard-- ebony black scales glistened in the red heated light of the molten rock around it and its beaming crimson eyes burnt themselves forever into Flaxen's mind the very second that merciless gaze met his own. With a hardy breath, the dragon belched a red hot fire-- Flaxen jumped out of the way, just in the nick of time, only having his tail singed a bit.
Looking up, the dragon stood in its long, thick legs. Its belly had the gleam of obsidian and the beast's claws were just the same. Flaxen, a small colt; though terrified, he didn't back down-- this was his destiny, this was what he always imagined playing with his toys. Only this time-- nothing was held back. The dragon swooped down its slender neck and attempted to bite the foal in two, only to miss, as Flaxen began to reenact all he had known. Jumping from rock to rock, leaping from the inner walls of the volcano, Flaxen was a natural. But in his adrenaline fueled high, he tripped over a large stone and fell just beneath an unstable formation, where the dragon cornered him and lunged forward at top speeds.
Flaxen rolled to his hooves and leaped free of the very jaws of Death-- the dragon crashed into the formation of rock, generating a massive rock slide which crushed it to death. Looking at the now dead dragon, Flaxen realized, he didn't even need to use his dagger, which remained in his mouth all of this time. Recollecting his belongings and placing them in the bag, just before putting the dagger back, Flaxen looked back at the corpse. Its beautiful scales almost beckoned to him. With the dagger in his mouth, he cut free a segment of scales-- the cut was naturally clean due to the shape and form of it. Flaxen was exhilarated; he traveled farther from home than he would have thought, went over seas and finally did what no one ever thought he would do; slay a dragon.
Back on the shoreline, the ponies that were their to do research were still there. They were startled by a rummaging in the undergrowth, until it was revealed that it was a small, straw-colored colt. The older stallions asked the colt what he was going there and Flaxen happily explained the story in vivid details. The crew seemed unimpressed, as the young colt had no proof, until he pulled from his bag ebony dragon scales. The ponies were in awe; if there was a dragon there when there was no migration, it was possibly injured or old and would easily level a city to call its own domain. Not only did Flaxen kill a dragon, but he also saved Baltimare-- the dragon most likely would've attacked the city, destroying all life there but itself. He was a hero.
The crew happily agreed to sail Flaxen back to Baltimare, where a frantic search was underway, as he was deemed missing for days. The crew members called the authorities; they and Flaxen's parents were waiting at the docks. Escorted off of the ship, the ponies were silent at the sight of Flaxen. An 11 year old colt defeated a dragon and took its scales as his prize. That, was a true dragon slayer. His parents were infuriated that he ran away, but they could not hold it against him-- they were supposed to support their child, no matter what. Several bullies from his school felt guilt that they harassed who was now their hero.
Now, those around him who once saw him as weird, once saw him as a nobody, they now see him as an extraordinary little colt. At that moment in the celebration, Flaxen got not only his namesake; Dragon Slayer of Baltimare, but he also obtained closure for his destiny-- his cutie mark. The very steel dagger he didn't even have to use in the fight against the dragon. But, the dagger had more purpose than just its traditional use; it was a sign of Flaxen's dreams to be placed at the edge of a blade, to be criticized until it was made clear the potential behind it.
"Like the size of a dagger, it is underestimated until it is used to its full advantage.", was the quote that sparked the inspirational uprising to Flaxen's ascendance into glory. Celestia held a grand knighting for the young colt-- he was given a small peridot amulet which gleamed which would draw a dragon to its ultimate demise... The flaxen coated colt of history. Today, he lives on the very island where dragons migrate, living in a small hut sculpted with volcanic ash. He stays there to weed out any threats to all of pony kind and if he is ever needed elsewhere, that Celestia would send him a letter immediately and he would be there to protect those who are faced by similar jaws he faced himself.
