- Stellaluna is a sarcastic, skeptical pessimist, who is quick to judge others and quick to tell others her judgements of them. She considers herself "normal" and has a strong dislike for anyone who might not go along with her standards of normal -- that is to say, overly happy ponies, overly depressed ponies, other rude ponies, self-centered ponies... Though she is less sarcastic rude around close friends, it's difficult to get on her good side, especially once someone has made what she considers a "bad" first impression. She is also a strong pacifist, and condemns anyone who dare so much as threaten violence (she has thrown a couple books at ponies before, but that hardly counts). Her job is her pride and joy in life, and if anyone who she deems is worthy of her kindness were to show any interest in her work, then she'd happily ramble for hours on end. It is also fairly difficult to say or do anything that would legitimately upset her, instead of her usual mild annoyance, which includes any sort of act of violence, a friend doing something to endanger themselves, or someone commenting on how little she has accomplished in her life -- she knows full well that her job, star mapping, is mostly meaningless, and tries not to focus on it.
~Backstory~
Stella was born in Manehatten and lived the majority of her life in a condo in the wealthiest neighborhood. Her mother was an important surgeon, sometimes carrying out procedures that would last more than a day. Her father was a manager of a popular bookstore, and worked from 6 AM to 9 PM six days a week. From this, Stella quickly grew accustomed to being alone in her home with nothing but books to entertain her.
Though the books on stars and astronomy, namely those written on the art of mapping stars, were more than interesting to her, Stella never discovered her one special talent. Though she knew plenty about the stars and even how to work a telescope, she never had the opportunity to use one, as the lights from the city were too bright for the stars to be visible. As all of the ponies around her at her school got their cutiemarks at normal, early ages, she remained a blank-flank. Her grades in school started to drop as she devoted all of her free time to other studying, desperately trying to find her talent. The snobby Manehatten foals around her were less than understanding, and though she learned to block out the teasing, it eventually grew too much for her to bear and she dropped out of school when she was sixteen. For three years, she shut herself away from the outside world, unable to get a job and discouraged from trying to be friendly to other ponies.
When Stella was 19, still living at home and still a blank flank, her mother was laid off from her job. Frustrated with the hospital and Manehatten, and unwilling to be swayed, she forced the family to go on a vacation to a remote village -- Stella was more than happy for a change in pace, though not necessarily a change to a pace so slow. They rented a tiny cottage, and with nothing else to do, Stella decided to put her knowledge of astronomy and celestial cartography -- star mapping -- to the test. As soon as she looked through the cheap telescope she bought with the little money she had, she received her cutiemark: two white stars. She was overjoyed, though mildly frustrated, and decided that night to pack up and find a new home. She left the next morning, with nothing but a quick goodbye to her parents, and set out for the capital of Dresenia.
